The influence of Carrie Johnson, the wife of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was criticized by Britain's most senior civil servant, Simon Case, during the pandemic, according to a WhatsApp exchange from 2020. The messages, released as part of the Covid inquiry, show Case complaining about Carrie's role and the government's image. The conversation also involved Downing Street aides Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain. The revelations are embarrassing for Case, who has faced several controversies during his time as Cabinet Secretary. The discussion about introducing regional lockdowns was presented to the inquiry to highlight dysfunctionality in No10.

Carrie Johnson: The "Real Person in Charge"

In the WhatsApp exchange, Case expresses frustration, saying he may just go home because he's unsure if he can handle the day. When asked what they're discussing, Case replies, "Whatever Carrie cares about, I guess." He goes on to say that he was always told Cummings was the secret PM, but it turns out Carrie is the one in charge. Cummings agrees, replying with "so true" and a laughing emoji. Cain adds that Carrie doesn't know what she's talking about either. Case then criticizes the credibility of the government and says they look like a terrible, tragic joke.

Clashes and Departures

Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain, who were top aides to Boris Johnson, left No10 in 2020 after clashes with Carrie became public. A close ally of Boris, Nadine Dorries, condemned the trio for attacking Carrie, calling them "nasty misogynist bullies" who have always tried to target Boris through his wife. Dorries emphasized that Carrie couldn't have possibly known about the criticisms.
