Background

Sir Bernard Ingham, known for his irascible and affable nature, passed away last year at the age of 90. He left behind an estate worth £1,084,708.

A Family Affair

In his will, made in 2016, Sir Bernard left his entire estate to his wife Lady Nancy Ingham, who was previously a police officer. However, as Lady Nancy passed away in 2017, the fortune now goes to their only son, John Ingham, a retired journalist from the Daily Express.

A Life in Journalism

Sir Bernard Ingham was born in 1932 and began his career in journalism at the age of 16, working for the local paper, Hebden Bridge Times. He later joined the Yorkshire Post, where he met his wife Nancy while covering court cases.

He then moved to the Guardian and became a Labour activist. Although he was unsuccessful in his bid for the city council, he went on to work as a government press officer and served as Baroness Thatcher's press secretary for eleven years.

A Multi-Talented Individual

Aside from his work in politics, Sir Bernard Ingham had a diverse career. He worked as a press officer for Labour MPs Barbara Castle and Tony Benn in the 1970s. After leaving Downing Street, he wrote memoirs, delivered political commentary, and even worked as a cruise lecturer and after-dinner speaker.

Sir Bernard retired at the age of 58, just two weeks after Mrs. Thatcher's resignation in 1990.
