Top teachers from Eton College will support thousands of disadvantaged children as part of a new initiative to raise school standards across England. In a move announced by ministers today, 15 new schools will be established, benefiting around 12,000 youngsters. Eton College, in collaboration with academy trust Star Academies, will set up three state sixth forms in Dudley, Middlesbrough, and Oldham.

Eton College and Star Academies team up

Three of the new schools, located in Dudley, Teeside, and Oldham, will function as sixth form colleges, with partial funding provided by Eton and Star Academies. In addition to traditional academic instruction, Eton College will offer disadvantaged students access to extracurricular activities and support from its highly qualified staff. The private school will contribute £1m per college, on top of the current funding levels. The selective sixth forms will enroll 240 students per year, with a total of 480 pupils when fully operational.

No tailcoats required

Unlike Eton College, these sixth form colleges will be mixed gender and will not require students to wear the traditional tailcoats. The aim is to encourage students to aspire to attend some of Britain's top universities, particularly Oxford and Cambridge. Eton's Head Master, Simon Henderson, expressed his delight at the decision and believes that these new colleges have the potential to be transformative for both the students and the communities they serve. Henderson stated, "Now the hard work really starts as we turn our vision into reality."

New opportunities for families

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan emphasized the government's commitment to expanding access to quality education. Keegan stated, "We want to make more good school places available to families, and these 15 new free schools will bring brand new opportunities to young people from Bradford to Bristol." Free schools, she added, bring high standards, greater choice for parents, and strong links to industry, particularly in areas where such opportunities are most needed.
