Tories and Labour Battle for Investment in Davos

Tories and Labour will go head-to-head in Davos this week as they try to show voters they can attract billions of pounds in investment to the UK. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and his Labour counterpart Rachel Reeves will try to grab the attention of global finance chiefs in the Swiss ski resort.

Labour Means Business

The shadow Chancellor will tell investors 'Labour means business' as she convenes senior finance figures to discuss her plans to "make, do and sell" more in Britain. This will be her second visit to the World Economic Forum after heading there with party leader Sir Keir Starmer last year.

Working with Business

A Labour source close to the Shadow Chancellor said: "Rachel's message to Davos will be simple: Labour means business. They have transformed the party and put together a serious, credible plan to get our economy growing, to cut people's bills and to create good jobs across the country. But, we know we cannot do it alone. The next Labour government will work alongside business to deliver for working people – and that's what this trip is about."

Firming Up Relationships

Reeves is hoping to strengthen the party's relationship with business, having been on a charm offensive with top bosses since taking up the role. She will host an event with shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds at a venue provided by City firm JP Morgan.

Engaging Beyond Westminster

Sir Keir Starmer, who chose Davos over Westminster last year, explained his decision by saying: "Because Westminster is too constrained. And, you know, it's closed and we're not having meaning. Once you get out of Westminster, whether it's Davos or anywhere else, you actually engage with people that you can see [yourself] working with in the future."
