Labour Candidate's Controversial Protest

Tories are expressing their disapproval over the election of Alistair Strathern, a self-proclaimed eco-zombie, to the Mid Bedfordshire seat. Strathern, 33, gained attention for dressing up as a ghoul during a zombie-themed Greenpeace protest last year, where he posed outside the Home Office. Images of him with face paint, including blood dripping from his mouth, have surfaced, sparking criticism.

Protest Against New Laws

The protest, organized by environmental activist groups, aimed to oppose new laws that restrict extreme protests. Strathern's participation in the demonstration has raised concerns among Tories, who argue that such tactics do not resonate with a large proportion of voters.

Tory Opposition and Future Plans

Despite winning the seat with a slim majority of just over 1,000 votes, Strathern is not receiving a warm welcome from the Conservatives. One Tory MP stated that they will target him in future elections, believing that he will struggle to maintain his position. The swing from Tory to Labour in this election was 20.5%, overturning a previous majority of 24,664.

Background and Support from Labour

Strathern, an Oxford University graduate, previously worked for the Bank of England as an advisor on climate matters. His controversial past has led to calls for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to reconsider his candidacy, but Starmer has decided to stand by Strathern.
