Gaffe After Claiming He Can't Afford to Live on £120,000 Salary

Tory MP George Freeman accidentally forwarded his nomination for a knighthood to 110 colleagues on a WhatsApp group. The gaffe occurred just hours after Freeman made headlines for claiming that he cannot afford his mortgage on a minister's £120,000 pay.

Letter Signed by Scientists Backing Freeman for Knighthood

The nomination letter, signed by three top scientists, supported Freeman for a "Knighthood for Services to Science and Public Service." The letter described him as an "outspoken champion" and a "defining force" deserving of the top honor. It also praised his non-partisan approach and the respect he has gained from colleagues across all parties.

Mistake Blamed on Junior Staffer

Friends of Freeman claimed that the mistake was made by a junior staffer who was attempting to forward the letter to him. They stated that the letter was drafted by Science and Technology leaders as their nomination, although they were not asked to do so.

Labour Criticizes Tories for Being Out of Touch

The Labour party seized on Freeman's comments about his salary and mortgage payments, using them to accuse the Tories of being out of touch. They also blamed Liz Truss for the mortgage woes faced by millions.

Freeman's Controversial Statements

Freeman caused further controversy by publicly stating that the Conservative party was heading for a heavy defeat in the General Election and that the UK was on course for a Labour government.

Downing Street has stated that there are no plans to change the approach to ministerial pay.
