Tory MP takes a stand against puppy smuggling

A plan to finally put an end to the cruel puppy smuggling trade is being championed by Tory MP Selaine Saxby. She is pushing for legal loopholes to be closed to prevent criminals from importing trendy dogs and cats in poor condition.

New proposal targets underage pets and illegal procedures

Saxby's proposal aims to ban pet sellers from importing puppies and kittens under six months old. It also seeks to prevent heavily pregnant cats and dogs from being transported. Additionally, the plan would stop the import of pets that have undergone illegal procedures in the UK, such as dogs with cropped ears and cats with removed claws.

Concerns over surge in puppy smuggling

The MP for North Devon expressed her concern over the significant increase in puppy smuggling, particularly during the pandemic. She emphasized the need to address this issue as demand for smuggled pets continues to rise.

Government's stance on puppy smuggling

Last year, the government dropped the Kept Animals Bill, which aimed to crack down on puppy smuggling. However, Environment Secretary Steve Barclay, known for his love of dogs, is reportedly troubled by the harm caused to animals and the distress experienced by pet owners due to this inhumane trade. The government is expected to reveal its position on the matter soon.
