TV star Chris Packham has launched a legal bid to halt the controversial HS2 project.

The Springwatch host claims the Government’s approval of the high-speed rail link is at odds with its target to go carbon neutral by 2050.

Chris, 58, signed up solicitors Leigh Day to write to Boris Jonson challenging his decision to give the nod to the multi-billion pound scheme.

The high-speed network would link London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

In the letter, the naturalist called the Oakervee review — which last month strongly warned the PM against cancelling HS2 — “compromised, incomplete and flawed”.

He says the review didn’t take into account the potential impact of HS2 on carbon emissions.

The initial environmental assessment for the project was published in 2013 — long before ex-PM Theresa May committed the Government to going carbon neutral by 2050.

Mr Packham said the bid to stop HS2 from going ahead was the “last stand for nature and the environment”.

He added: “In regard to the HS2 rail project I believe our government has failed.”

The Department for Transport said it will respond “in due course” to the appeal.

Last week plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport were hit after campaigners won a legal challenge.

Judges ruled it was unlawful because the plans didn’t take into account the Government’s climate change commitments.
