Former Party Chairman Speaks Out

Oliver Dowden, the UK Deputy Prime Minister, has denied allegations that he covered up sex attack allegations during his time as party chairman. The denial comes in response to a letter written by one of his successors, which claimed that limited action had been taken against a serial rapist MP despite multiple allegations.

Zero Tolerance for Sexual Misconduct

Dowden emphasized that he takes any allegation of sexual misconduct extremely seriously and that the Conservative Party has a zero tolerance policy for such behavior. He also highlighted the party's independent complaints mechanism, which investigates any allegations that arise.

Possible Criminal Offense

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis stated that if there had been a cover-up of rape claims, it would constitute a criminal offense in its own right. Dowden categorically denied any cover-up and insisted that he did not brush aside the issue during his time as party chairman.

Allegations Uncovered by Ex-Party Chairman

Sir Jake Berry, a former party chairman, discovered the allegations when he learned that one of the assault victims received treatment at a private hospital, paid for by the party. In a joint letter with ex-Chief Whip Wendy Morton, Berry claimed that up to five victims were subjected to offenses, including multiple rapes, and that limited action allowed the alleged perpetrator to continue offending.

Hospital Payments

When questioned about the hospital payments, Dowden stated that he did not authorize them and that it was not something he was aware of during his time as party chairman.
