Labour Leader Under Fire

Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is facing calls to resign from within his own party over his refusal to back a ceasefire in Gaza. Burnley Council leader Afrasiab Anwar, along with ten others, has resigned from the party and called for Starmer's resignation.

Accusations of Blindly Following

Afrasiab Anwar criticized Starmer for "blindly following Rishi Sunak" and stated that this was not acceptable. Pendle Borough Council leader Asjad Mahmood also accused Starmer of failing to listen to calls for a ceasefire to prevent the loss of innocent lives.

22 Labour Councillors on Burnley Council and 9 on Pendle Borough Council

The resignations come as a blow to the Labour Party, as there are now 22 Labour councillors on Burnley Council and 9 on Pendle Borough Council who have called for Starmer's resignation.

Starmer's Controversial Stance

During a major speech on Tuesday, Starmer insisted that an immediate ceasefire would allow Hamas to regather strength and carry out more terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. This stance has been met with criticism and protests from pro-Palestine activists.

Defending Israel's Right to Self-Defense

In his speech, Starmer argued that Israel has the right to defend itself, but must do so within the confines of international law. He also called for a "humanitarian pause" in the fighting to allow much-needed aid to reach Gaza.
