Stats Expose Disparity in Housing Asylum Seekers

James Cleverly, the Home Secretary, has called on Scotland and Wales to step up and provide housing for more asylum seekers, highlighting the significant difference in numbers compared to England. While England houses 16 asylum seekers for every 10,000 people, SNP-run Scotland only takes in 8 and Labour-run Wales just 9.

Push for Equal Responsibility

Cleverly emphasized the importance of each part of the country playing its part in housing asylum seekers, urging Scotland and Wales to reconsider their approaches. He even suggested utilizing cruise ships and former Army barracks as potential housing solutions.

Challenges and Targets

Both Scotland and Wales have struggled to meet their full dispersal occupancy targets for housing asylum seekers, with numbers falling short since the implementation of a new policy in April 2022. Cleverly's letter to the Welsh leader highlighted the significant gap between the current number of occupied beds and the target for 2023.

Political Backlash and Advocacy

Political leaders in Scotland, including SNP's Stephen Flynn, have criticized the UK government's handling of asylum seekers and advocated for a more welcoming approach. Flynn emphasized the positive impact of migration on communities, the economy, and essential services.
