Rishi Sunak Orders Police to Be Vigilant

Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, has warned pro-Palestine protesters against disrupting Remembrance weekend and has ordered the police to crack down on any signs of trouble. Sunak described organizing a protest march during this time as "provocative and disrespectful."

Fears of Disruption to Armistice Day Commemorations

There are concerns that tens of thousands of marchers calling for a Gaza ceasefire could disrupt Armistice Day commemorations for fallen heroes. The events include a two-minute silence and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, attended by senior members of the Royal Family.

PM Calls for Police Resources and Possible Protest Ban

Sunak has called on Home Secretary Suella Braverman to provide the police with all the necessary resources to protect Remembrance events. He has also mentioned the possibility of using powers to ban the protests. Sunak emphasized the importance of protecting the sanctity of Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

New Laws to Tackle Protest Tactics

New laws allow the police to address protest tactics such as slow walking and individuals locking themselves to buildings and highways. Sunak highlighted these measures in his letter to Met Police boss Sir Mark Rowley, offering the government's full support in protecting the upcoming commemorations.

Reactions from Officials

The Home Secretary and Shadow Security Minister Dan Jarvis both expressed agreement with the Prime Minister, stating that protests should not take place near Remembrance Sunday services. Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has written to the London Mayor, Westminster Council, and Scotland Yard, urging them to consider the powers available to them. However, London Mayor Sadiq Khan accused Tugendhat of "posturing."

Security Operation in Place to Prevent Disruption

The Metropolitan Police have assured the public that there will be a "significant" security operation to prevent Palestinian demonstrators from disrupting Armistice Day. The police have been in dialogue with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and the organizers have expressed their intention not to disrupt remembrance events.

Organizers of the pro-Palestine march are calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
