Teaching Inmates to Manage Anger through Music

A prison in Devon, HMP Dartmoor, is investing nearly £10,000 in a program that teaches inmates how to use their bodies to make music. The "body percussion" lessons encourage prisoners to use different parts of their body, such as slapping thighs and clicking fingers, to create music. The aim of the program is to help inmates manage their anger. Popular tracks used in these lessons include Pharrell Williams' hit "Happy" and Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling."

Contract Given to Wiltshire Firm Kaboom!

HMP Dartmoor has awarded a year-long contract to Kaboom!, a Wiltshire-based firm, to provide these cognitive-based therapy workshops. The Ministry of Justice has justified the £9,600 deal by stating that programs like these can help reduce crime and ultimately save taxpayer money. However, a recent inspection at HMP Dartmoor revealed that the prison was failing to provide adequate living conditions, education, and work opportunities for inmates.

Prison System in Chaos

The decision to invest in music lessons for inmates has attracted criticism from the Labour party, with one source stating that the prison system is in total chaos. They argue that the move is laughable considering the government's failure to ensure public safety. The prison system has been facing significant challenges, with a high number of prison officers leaving their jobs and an increase in assaults on a weekly basis.

The Prison Service, however, defends the program, stating that initiatives like these play a role in cutting crime and protecting the public.
