A recent poll has revealed that voters in the UK are not willing to bear the financial burden of higher taxes in order to achieve the Net Zero target sooner than the set deadline of 2050. Only 25% of respondents said they would be willing to accept the cost to accelerate the eco pledge.

Public Opposition to Higher Taxes

According to the survey conducted by Savanta for the PLMR agency, a quarter of respondents said they "strongly disagree" with the idea of paying more taxes, while 21% said they "disagree". Another 30% showed ambivalence towards the proposition.

Support for Cost-Free Green Initiatives

While voters are reluctant to bear the cost of higher taxes, the majority (72%) showed support for relatively cost-free green initiatives. This includes switching off lights and appliances to reduce electricity consumption. Additionally, 57% of respondents expressed support for increasing recycling efforts.

Reluctance to Make Personal Sacrifices

The survey also highlighted that fewer voters are willing to make personal sacrifices to achieve the Net Zero goal. Only 24% expressed a willingness to reduce the number of foreign holidays, 29% are open to switching to electric cars, and 31% are willing to change their diet.

Warnings Against Burdening Families

Conservative MPs have cautioned against imposing heavy financial burdens on families to meet the legally-binding 2050 target. Chancellor Rishi Sunak has scaled back some costly climate policies, but the ban on new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 remains in place.

Craig McKinley, a Conservative MP, emphasized that the UK public already faces a high tax burden and cost of living pressures. He argued that the expensive and flawed technologies necessary for achieving Net Zero do not come cheap. McKinley also claimed that the lack of international action and appetite for higher prices or taxation has resulted in public skepticism towards bearing the burden of such measures.
