WELSH Secretary Alun Cairns has resigned after accusations he lied about his aide who sabotaged a rape trial.

He handed in his notice to Boris Johnson this morning, just minutes before the PM will launch his election campaign.

The Cabinet minister claimed he was unaware of former staff member Ross England’s role in the collapsed trial until the story emerged last week.

But BBC Wales revealed a leaked email sent to Mr Cairns where it showed he had been made aware of the allegations last August.

It was sent by his special advice and was also copied in to the Director of the Welsh Conservatives, Richard Minshull.

But Mr England went on to be selected as the Tory candidate for the Vale of Glamoran for the 2021 Welsh Assembly election.

Mr Cairn’s opposite number Christina Rees accused him of “brazenly lying” about his knowledge.
