Introducing Sarah Jane Brown

Sarah Jane Brown, born Sarah Macaulay on October 31, 1963, in Buckinghamshire, is the wife of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

She is a passionate advocate for global health and education, as well as the founder and chair of the children’s charity Theirworld. Sarah is also the executive chair of the Global Business Coalition for Education.

Despite spending most of her childhood in Tanzania, Sarah moved back to the UK at the age of seven after her parents separated. She earned a degree in psychology from Bristol University and then worked in brand consultancy before co-founding the public relations firm Hobsbawn Macaulay Communications with a friend. Sarah gave up her PR business in 2001.

In addition to her charitable work, Sarah is the global patron of The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood and a patron of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and SHINE Education Trust. She is also an author, having written the book Behind The Black Door, a personal memoir about life at 10 Downing Street.

The Marriage of Sarah Jane and Gordon Brown

Sarah Jane and Gordon Brown were married in August 2000 in a private ceremony held in North Queensferry, Fife.

Children and Tragedy

Sarah and Gordon have three children together – two sons named John and James Fraser, as well as a daughter named Jennifer Jane. Sadly, Jennifer Jane passed away at the age of 10 days old in 2002.

In a recent interview, Sarah described the loss as a heartbreaking experience that will always remain a part of her. She said, "It’s a huge loss that Gordon and I live with every day. We can remember every moment with her because it was so precious. I feel I got to know her really well."

Following their devastating loss, the couple established the Jennifer Brown Research Laboratory at Edinburgh University and the Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort to advance research on the causes of premature birth. Their work focuses on a comprehensive approach to complications in pregnancy and childbirth, with a particular emphasis on preterm births.

In conclusion, Sarah Jane Brown is not only the wife of a former Prime Minister, but she is also a dedicated campaigner, philanthropist, and author. While the couple has faced tragedy, they continue to make a difference in the world through their charitable efforts.
