Yobs who cause havoc in their neighborhoods may soon face a two-year ban from social housing. The proposed overhaul of how homes are allocated in England aims to create more space for law-abiding citizens by blocking those with unspent convictions and anti-social orders from applying.

New Measures to Tackle Troublemakers

Under the new measures, social landlords will have the power to issue three warnings to noisy and unruly tenants before taking action. This move is aimed at ensuring peace and quiet for residents and addressing the issue of persistent troublemakers.

A government source emphasized the need to prioritize deserving families on waiting lists, stating, "It’s not right to have people who make their neighbors' lives a misery staying in social homes while deserving families are stuck on waiting lists."

Consultation on the Shake-Up

Ministers are set to launch a consultation next week to gather feedback on the proposed changes. The focus of the consultation will be on ensuring social housing is allocated to those who need it most and contribute the most to the country.

One aspect of this approach involves prioritizing British families by placing them at the top of waiting lists for social housing. The aim is to prioritize "British homes for British workers." Government figures reveal that 90% of lead tenants in social housing are British.

Concerns Over Foreign Allocation

The issue of housing allocation to foreigners has also come under scrutiny. In the London borough of Brent, for example, 40% of new social homes were let to foreigners in the past year. Housing Secretary Michael Gove has highlighted the pressure caused by migration on housing availability.

Investment in Affordable Housing

The government is taking steps to address the housing shortage by investing £11.5 billion in the Affordable Homes Programme. This investment aims to deliver thousands of new homes for purchase and rental across England, providing more options for those in need.
