THOUSANDS marched through London today to protest the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, as Derek Chauvin faces a 40 year jail term if convicted of his murder.

On Thursday, the former officer – who was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neckĀ  – had his charge upgraded from third to second-degree murder.

Three other former police officers present during the arrest have also been charged with aiding and abetting, and face the same punishment if found guilty.

Worldwide outrage continues to flare up over the death of the unarmed black man at the hands of US police, with protests taking place in Stockholm, Athens, Rotterdam and Edinburgh.

In London, activists started arriving at around 10am with chants heard of “no justice, no peace”.

Police hailed the protests as largely peaceful – but a small flare up in the evening outside Downing Street saw two men arrested for assaulting an emergency worker.

People across the UK also “took the knee” on their doorsteps at 6pm to show solidarity for the global Black Lives Movement.

Meanwhile, demonstrators defied curfews in the US.

In New York City, police officers trying to wind down a day of peaceful protests allegedly arrested at least 40 people for breaking a 7pm curfew as looting broke out around Manhattan.

In LA, protesters staged a post-curfew sit-in outside Mayor Eric Garcetti’s home.

They held up their hands and chanted “peaceful protest” while ignoring the police’s orders to move.

And in Atlanta, tensions increased between protesters and police just before the 9pm curfew as officers launched tear gas into crowds.
