Legendary Actor's Legacy
Bill Treacher, the EastEnders actor who played the iconic character Arthur Fowler, has left an estate worth over £500,000 to his wife and family after his passing at the age of 92 last year.
A Soap Icon
Treacher was an original cast member of the popular BBC soap EastEnders and portrayed Arthur Fowler from 1985 to 1996. His portrayal of the character's mental health struggles and nervous breakdown earned him critical acclaim.
A Life Impacted by Illness
In 2015, Treacher revealed that he was battling ataxia, a disorder that affects coordination, balance, and speech. Unfortunately, the disease eventually made it impossible for him to continue his acting career due to its impact on his ability to walk. He first needed walking sticks, then a frame, and eventually a wheelchair.
Unfortunate End to a Storied Career
Treacher's appearance on EastEnders came to an end in 1996 when his character was locked up for a crime he didn't commit. Despite this setback, he continued to act in notable productions such as The Sweeney, Dad's Army, and Casualty.
A Life Well Lived
Born in Hackney, London, in 1940, Treacher was one of eight children. Throughout his life, he had diverse experiences, including being evacuated to Gloucestershire during World War II, serving in the Royal Air Force, and working for P&O before saving enough money to attend drama school.
Generous Family Man
In his will, Treacher left his estate on trust for his wife and children, Jamie and Sophie. He also named his grandchildren as potential beneficiaries at the discretion of his executors and trustees.
Figures from the probate office revealed that Treacher's estate was valued at £504,676.10 following his death from Covid and pneumonia in November 2022.
