Actress Melanie Hill Takes on New Role in Medical Drama
Coronation Street star Melanie Hill has landed a new role in rival soap Casualty, just a year after leaving the cobbles. The 61-year-old actress has joined the medical drama as Clinical Nurse Manager Siobhan Mackenzie, described as a "no-nonsense team leader who looks set to ruffle a few feathers."
Excitement for the New Role
Melanie expressed her excitement for her new role, stating, "I am delighted to be joining the cast of Casualty and I can't wait for fans to meet Siobhan. She's a supremely competent manager, who is firm but fair and expects nothing but the best from her nursing team. However, get on the wrong side of her and she'll make mincemeat out of you! I'm sure she's going to ruffle a few feathers in the Emergency Department."
Praise from the Executive Producer
Jon Sen, the Executive Producer of Casualty for BBC Studios, also expressed his excitement for Melanie's addition to the show, saying, "I am so excited to welcome Melanie to the team. I've been a huge admirer of her work for years and it's wonderful to see her here at Holby. We've got brilliant stories lined up for Siobhan and can't wait for the audience to meet her."
Coronation Street and Future Plans
Melanie joined Coronation Street in 2015 as Roy Cropper's love interest Cathy Matthews. She described her time on the show as a "dream come true." However, her decision to leave the soap followed the coronavirus pandemic. Melanie explained, "It's not been an easy thing to decide. My family has been important but the pandemic has made a lot of people think about the future. It has changed a lot of things in my head. You've just got to see what's important to you."
Possibility of a Return
Although Melanie has left Coronation Street, there is room for a return in the future as her character was not killed off. Instead, Cathy simply drove away for a new life after splitting from Brian Packham.
Melanie Hill will be seen on screen in her new role in Casualty in the new year.
