It came during a particularly feisty scene during which a woman was rude to his character while boarding a Weatherfield Wayfarer bus.

Later that night, after the episode aired, Peter took to Twitter to reveal the real deal.

He uploaded a snap showing himself sandwiched between his real mum and on-screen parent Bernie Winter, played by Jane Hazlegrove.

The trio can be seen flashing beaming smiles to the camera as they stand outside the transport hub where the ITV scene was filmed.

In his caption Peter, who first appeared on the Corrie cobbles back in 2018, gushed: “Me two mams!

“My amazing mum played the ‘rude lady getting on the bus’ in tonight’s episode!

“She’s obviously nowt like that in real life!

“In fact she’s the best! So is Jane Hazlegrove, my on-screen mum!”

His fans were quick to react, with their management company writing: “We thought it would be a nice little cameo for you both.”

One Corrie viewer put: “Oh wow!! Your Mum was AMAZING!!!!! Ooh so scornful!! I bet you daren’t be late for your tea?”

Another posted: “Ha! That’s brilliant. Was that an Edinburgh accent?”

A third commented: “Ooh and I was calling her everything but a lady for being so rude to Paul.”

Paul’s character is a twin brother to Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and partner to Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank).

His first introduction to fans was as the cellmate to David Platt, who was in prison for his attack on Gary Windass.

Months later upon his release, it transpired that he was Gemma’s twin and she lived on the same street as David.

He eventually managed to get a job at the factory working for Carla Connor in packing.

Paul was recently given the heartbreaking diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND).

Peter will be leaving the ITV soap opera at the end of his current storyline.

His character will die from his condition in what looks set to be incredibly moving scenes yet no date has yet been confirmed for Peter’s departure.
