EMMERDALE fans are in shock after the hit and run driver was revealed tonight.

Villain Alex was left for dead after being accidentally run over on the outskirts of the village.

Alex was struck by a car in tonight’s Emmerdale

The driver didn’t hang around to see if he was OK

He had robbed the surgery and relieved it of all its medicines as part of his sick scheme to pay off drug debts for him and girlfriend Claire.

His stealing from the surgery came as Dawn and Billy confirmed the adoption and guardianship order for Alex’s children Lucas and Clemmie.

In the village, Charles ran into Alex and caught him red-handed.

He fled but Charles gave chase but he ended up losing him in the village.

Alex ran across fields and called Claire for help – pacing into the road and back – which proved his mistake when a car appeared and slammed into him.

The villain was sent flying as the driver of the car got out to see what he’s done – and it was revealed to be Billy Fletcher.

In a shock move he walked away.

But after realising what he’d done, Billy lost it back in the car.

Screaming at himself, he made the shock decision to drive away and leave Alex for dead on the road.

Heading back to Home Farm, Billy could barely hold it together and ended up confessing to Dawn.

“I hit Alex,” he said, adding: “In the car.”

“I didn’t see him, he just stepped out. I didn’t see him. How would it look if I was there after the other day? I don’t know if he’s OK.”

Dawn tried to calm Billy down as he spiralled and then snapped into action.

She told him: “You need to put the car in the barn, lock the door and meet me out front.

“We need to go back there and find out how bad it is.”

Arriving back on the scene, Dawn and Billy were horrified to find police swarming the lane.

“If he saw you we have a problem,” Dawn said before adding ominously: “If he’s alive.”

Viewers are in shock at the twist.

One wrote: “Oh blimey, Billy ran him over…”

A second said: “It’s Billy… ffs!!”

Another added: “Why did it have to be him that hit him ffs #emmerdale let them be happy for once.”

Billy was revealed as the driver who fled the scene
