MANY familiar faces in the Dales have been involved in other TV ventures prior to their arrival in the eponymous village.

Emmerdale fans were notably shocked to see one of the show’s icon star in an unearthed gardening video.

One soap icon starred in a surprising video

Jonny McPherson is known as Liam Cavanagh on ITV

But he was worlds away from his role in a gardening advert

Making his first appearance in the Yorkshire Dales in 2014, Dr Liam Cavanagh became a series regular in 2018.

Actor Jonny McPherson has been a familiar face in the long-running soap ever since, becoming involved in a string of explosive storylines.

On-screen, villagers firmly rely on his expertise but his personal life, as proven by his recent separation from soap wife Leyla, is somewhat chaotic.

But much like many other show stars, Jonny was worlds away from his alter ego before finding fame in the ITV village.

In an unearthed video, the 51-year-old actor has discarded Liam Cavanagh’s usual buttoned up shirts and jumpers in favour of a black track top and matching trousers.

Jonny completes the look with brown working boots – the sort of laid-back clothing Liam has been seen sporting while working on the Emmerdale allotment.

The TV star was part of an advert for Rolawn Limited filmed outdoors at a property, which was recently posted online by an Emmerdale fan.

“Dr Liam before he was famous”, the soap fan quipped before adding: “I was looking at videos about laying lawn (I know I’m sad) – and I came across this – I thought I know him!!!”

Jonny can be seen giving viewers tips on how to get their new turf looking in shape, which included mowing and watering advice.

He even got down to business himself by using a lawnmower with protective glasses and air defenders to demonstrate how to take care of a new lawn.

Many viewers reacted to the post with one of them commenting: “Explains why he likes the allotment so much.”

Diehard fans of the long-running drama will probably know that Jonny appeared several appearances in Emmerdale before becoming a recurring character in 2014.

Jonny was first seen in September, 2008, as Dr Jonathan Boam who looked after Donna Windsor-Dingle as she was recovering from a car crash.

This was the actor’s first ever role on the small screen and, judging by the trajectory of his career, he was an instant hit.

Two years later, he was called back to portray a nurse on duty when Jackson Walsh was injured by a train.

He then resurfaced as an unnamed doctor who tended to Cain Dingle in December, 2011 and even helped Rhona Goskirk in August, 2013, when the vet became addicted to pain killers.

Emmerdale airs from Monday to Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
