FINAL Fantasy fanatics have been waiting to hear news of the sixteenth game’s release ever since the latest entry in the series launched in 2016.

Final Fantasy 15 released over seven years ago, and completely changed how the mainline series plays.

It’s coming sooner than many expected

Moving away from the classic turn-based battle formulas, FF15 introduced fans to a new real-time action-focused play style.

This new play style was well received by fans, and is one of the reasons that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was so successful.

Final Fantasy 16 was first announced in September 2020, and since then there has been a lot of speculation on the release date.

In the last trailer drop before the game awards, we were given a summer 2023 release window.

However, Naoki Yoshida, best known for creating MMO Final Fantasy 14, also teased that fans would be surprised at how early in the season it would be released.

We now know that Final Fantasy 16 will be released on June 22, 2022, with the only known platform for release being PlayStation 5.

The Final Fantasy series is known for its multi-platform releases and this could indicate that it is a timed exclusive for the PlayStation console.

Yoshida appeared on stage during The Game Awards to make the announcement, and reveal the latest trailer called Revenge.

As well as a number of cutscenes and some details on the story, it also showcased some of the most intense combat sequences we’ve seen in trailers to date.

Final Fantasy 16 was recently rated ‘Mature’ in South Korea, leading many to think the release date wasn’t far off.

The mature rating suggests that the game can feature “violence, sexual content, and disturbing situations”.

Final Fantasy games have been known to deal with more mature themes, in particular when it comes to violent content.

Many games show the harsh realities and violence of war despite the fantasy setting.

This includes main characters who can die and be removed from the games at certain points.
