If you're a gaming fan, you may be in for a big surprise. One of the most highly anticipated games of 2023 has plummeted to its lowest price ever – but there's a catch.

Early discount defies expectations

It's not every day that a game sees such a drastic price drop shortly after its release. The industry norm is for games to go on sale much later, rewarding those who purchase on day one. However, there are exceptions, and the studio behind this particular game hopes that the early sale will give sales a much-needed boost.

A gaming flop

The game in question is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was launched in late May 2023. Despite the hype and anticipation, the game has received scathing reviews from both critics and players alike.

On review aggregate site Metacritic, it currently stands at an abysmal 34 critic score and a shocking 1.2 user score. This places it among the worst-reviewed games not just of this year, but possibly of all time.

Gollum has been plagued by numerous glitches that make it virtually unplayable. Players have reported frequent crashes and frustrating bugs that hinder progress. Critics have labeled it a "complete failure," highlighting outdated graphics, poor platforming sequences, and clunky menus reminiscent of games from the early days of Flash.

Despite the curiosity surrounding just how bad the game could be, the high price of £55 ($70) deterred most gamers from taking the risk.

Unprecedented sale opportunity

However, for those still interested in experiencing this infamous game, the PlayStation August Sale offers a chance to grab the Premium Precious Edition at its lowest price ever. With a whopping 40% discount, the game is now available for just £32.99 ($41.99) for PS Plus subscribers.

Even if you're not a PS Plus member, you can still nab the Standard Edition at a 33% discount for £33.49 ($40.19). But be warned, it may still be a hefty price to pay for what is widely seen as a truly terrible game.

Whether you're brave enough to take the leap or not is up to you.
