Gamers have more time to upgrade their Google Stadia controllers

Google has extended the deadline for Stadia owners to upgrade their controllers before they become completely useless. Originally, users were given until the end of this year to make the switch. However, Google has now announced that gamers will have until the end of 2024 to upgrade their controllers.

Background: Google Stadia and Its Failed Promise

Google Stadia was initially touted as the "Netflix of gaming," offering cloud-streamed gaming services with just a controller and a Chrome device. However, the platform failed to gain traction, leading Google to announce its shutdown by the end of 2022. This left many gamers with controllers they could no longer use.

The Tool for Converting Stadia Controllers

To address this issue, Google released a special tool that allows Stadia controllers to be converted into standard PC controllers, enabling gamers to use them with other games. Originally, this tool was set to disappear on December 31, 2023. However, Google's recent extension gives users an additional year to upgrade their controllers.

How to Convert Your Stadia Controller

If you still need to upgrade your Stadia controller, follow these steps:

  1. Charge your Stadia controller to at least 10% battery.
  2. Open the Chrome web browser on your PC and go to the Stadia web page.
  3. Click the Start button and accept the terms.
  4. Connect your Stadia controller to your PC using a USB data cable.
  5. Allow Chrome to verify the controller.
  6. Select the controller from the list and click Connect.
  7. Unlock the Stadia controller by unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding the three dot button. The status light should stay off.
  8. Press the three dot button, the Google Assistant button, A, and Y simultaneously.
  9. Click Next step on the Chrome browser.
  10. Allow Chrome to download the update and select SP Blank RT Family from the list.
  11. Click Connect and wait for the download to complete.
  12. Click Next step to begin the installation.
  13. Allow Chrome to install and select USB COMPOSITE DEVICE from the popup box.
  14. Wait for the installation to finish without unplugging the controller or turning off your computer.
  15. Your Stadia controller is now ready to use with other wireless gaming services.

How to Pair Your Stadia Controller with Bluetooth

If your Stadia controller is in Bluetooth mode, follow these steps to pair it:

  1. Hold the Stadia button and Y for about two seconds until the status light flashes orange.
  2. On your gaming device, search for a Bluetooth accessory and select your Stadia controller from the list.
