Mobile gaming is leveling up

Big-name triple-A games are now becoming playable on smart devices, thanks to the iPhone 15 Pro and its ability to provide PC and console experiences on Apple devices. While games like Death Stranding and Assassin's Creed Mirage are not available yet, we were able to test Resident Evil Village, the latest game in the series, on an M1 iPad Pro.

Controller vs Touchscreen

When it comes to playing games on mobile, you have the option to use either touchscreen controls or a controller. We opted for the controller as touchscreen controls often cover the already limited screen. However, without a controller, the whole screen is consumed by controls, which can be a drawback.

Impressive quality on a small device

Despite our tempered expectations, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of Resident Evil Village on the iPad Pro. While there are limitations in terms of graphical options and performance, the overall gameplay experience is still impressive for a mobile device. We recommend targeting 30fps and medium graphical settings for decent performance.

Controller improves the experience

Resident Evil Village is not optimized for mobile, as the UI covers half of the screen with button prompts and navigating menus using the touch screen is not possible. However, with a controller, the experience is much improved, although there may be some input lag that could be unacceptable for hardcore gamers.

Battery drain and overheating

Playing Resident Evil Village on your phone drains the battery quickly and makes the device hot. This limits the amount of time you can play the game on your phone. While M3-based Apple devices could potentially rival handheld consoles, previous-gen smartphones and tablets cannot replace devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck.

Apple aiming high

Apple has set its sights high when it comes to gaming experiences on its smart devices. The company hopes to run PS5 games on its phones, but the performance with a PS4 game like Resident Evil Village may not meet expectations. Unless you have the latest-gen Apple device, it may not be the best way to experience the game.
