Nintendo has a reputation for delivering incredible first-party series, featuring beloved characters like Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon that can only be found on their consoles.

But not all series have stood the test of time, leaving fans longing for the return of their favorites.

Although some revivals have been met with mixed reviews, like the underwhelming Star Fox Zero during the Wii U era, fans continue to clamor for the reappearance of their beloved franchises.

Now, it's F-Zero's turn to take the spotlight. During the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, the gaming giant announced the launch of a new F-Zero game for free.

F-Zero 99: A Revived Classic

Nintendo Online subscribers can now enjoy F-Zero 99 as part of their subscription—an exciting development considering it's the first F-Zero game released in 19 years.

Drawing inspiration from the original F-Zero game for the SNES, this new installment injects a battle royale-style gameplay into the classic racing formula.

The game's unique twist? Up to 99 players can compete on the track at once, engaging in high-speed races where strategic decision-making is key.

Players must skillfully balance their health, deciding whether to preserve it or use it to gain an advantage on the track. It's a thrilling and fast-paced multiplayer experience that's already garnering positive feedback from players.

A Growing Trend

F-Zero 99 joins the ranks of other games that have been reimagined in the battle royale-style format.

It all started with Tetris 99, the original game that captured the community's attention and continues to be immensely popular online.

In 2020, Super Mario Bros. 35 was released to celebrate the series' 35th anniversary and received significant acclaim. Sadly, after the anniversary celebrations ended, the servers for the game were shut down despite its popularity.

While some games, like Pac-Man 99, have already met their end earlier this year, the genre remains a fascinating and evolving phenomenon. It seems Nintendo is keen to capitalize on this trend, giving fans an innovative way to enjoy classic franchises.
