Key Features Stripped Away, Millions at Stake

Xbox players are up in arms as a forthcoming update from the gaming giant could potentially cost them millions. The update, set to roll out soon, will remove crucial features from the console and render many Xbox purchases useless.

Third-Party Controllers Rendered Useless

One of the major changes with this update is the removal of compatibility with most third-party controllers. These are controllers that were not authorized or manufactured by Xbox. Starting November 12, 2023, unlicensed third-party Xbox controllers will no longer function with the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Exception for Licensed Controllers

Only licensed controllers, featuring official Xbox licensing on the packaging, will be exempt from this change. However, a wide range of accessories that Xbox does not produce itself, including controllers for accessibility, fight sticks, and steering wheels, will cease to work after the update.

Xbox's Revenue-Boosting Move

The decision to eliminate compatibility with third-party products is reportedly part of Xbox's strategy to license more third-party items and generate additional revenue from the market. Unfortunately, this move comes at the expense of Xbox players who rely on these controllers and accessories.

Dismay Among Players

Players attempting to use their existing third-party controllers are now encountering an error message that states: "A connected accessory is not authorized. Using unauthorized accessories compromises your gaming experience. For this reason, the unauthorized accessory will be blocked from use on 11/12/2023. For help returning it, check with the store it came from or contact the manufacturer. To see authorized accessories, go to www.xbox.com/accessories. (0x82d60002)."

Seeking a Solution

While third-party retailers claim to be working on software solutions to keep their products functional after the update, there is no guarantee that a solution will be found.
