BRITS are set to enjoy a weekend of breezy sunshine – but more thunderstorms and heavy rain are just around the corner.

Despite the wet start for most of the country today, the rain will slowly start to clear up.

Conditions are meant to brighten in Northern Scotland as low clouds and fog lift across the rest of the UK.

It will however stay blustery in the southwest and far north for the remainder of the day.

The Met Office has forecast some heavy showers tonight which will mainly affect parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland, north Wales and northwest England.

The sunshine is then expected to make an appearance on Saturday accompanied by a slight breeze – but it won’t last for long.

While highs of 18C are being reported, rain is forecast to return in the evening.

It will start in the north and spread down south along with the wind.

It comes after four flood alerts were issued on Thursday and a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and lightening.

A jet stream was sweeping across the UK, bringing with it the wet weather and prompting the alert.

The warning covered parts of the southeast, the midlands and the north and was in place until 1pm.

Speaking in the Met Office 10 Day Trend, Presenter and Meteorologist Alex Deakin said: “Low-pressure is going to dominate things for the next ten days, bringing spells of wet and windy weather and also some quite high temperatures.

“It’s this low pressure that’s helping to draw warmer air up from the south, even though unsettled weather will be possible through the weekend and into early next week.

“Because of that warmer air for the next several days, it’s going to be warmer than average by day and particularly warmer than average across the south at night.

“Between these weather fronts, there will, at times, be spells of sunshine and when the sun is out it’s going to feel quite mild.”

Highs of 19C were previously forecast in southern England but again made only a brief appearance as Autumn sets in.

Low clouds and fog will start to lift across the rest of the UK.

Heavy rain will return on Saturday night according to the Met Office
