Major Change at Aldi Stores

Aldi is making a significant change to a household essential at over 200 stores, as the budget supermarket trials double toilet rolls in an effort to help the environment.

Tackling Waste with Double Rolls

The switch to double rolls aims to tackle waste, as shoppers will now get twice as many sheets per roll than before. For example, if you usually buy a pack of 16 standard loo rolls at Aldi, you can now purchase a pack of eight double rolls, with the same amount of paper but on fewer rolls.

Current Trial and Potential Impact

The change is currently being trialled at 200 Aldi stores in the West Midlands, East Midlands, and Yorkshire. The double rolls will be available in packs of four, six, eight, and twelve. If the trial is successful and implemented in all stores, it could result in Aldi removing over 60 tonnes of plastic packaging per year and reducing the number of lorry journeys required.

Shoppers Divided

Opinions among shoppers are divided regarding the change. Some have expressed concerns about the new toilet roll packs, questioning if they will fit on a wall toilet roll dispenser. However, others have stated that the change doesn't bother them and that there are more important things to think about than loo rolls.

Other Supermarkets' Changes

Aldi is not the only supermarket making changes to loo roll. Asda doubled the length of its own-brand loo paper in 2022, making two rolls equivalent to four. Tesco has also announced the launch of a new range of toilet roll and kitchen towel made from recycled cardboard and pulp.

Sustainability Efforts

Supermarkets and retailers have been making various changes recently to cut costs and be more environmentally friendly. Sainsbury's changed its mince meat packaging, Co-op switched up its beef packaging, Lidl introduced recyclable vacuum-sealed packaging, and Waitrose ditched its milk caps. Marks & Spencer and Asda also removed best before dates from some of their fresh produce.

Tips for Saving Money at Aldi

In addition to these changes, there are other ways to save money at Aldi. Shoppers can look out for red stickers, which indicate reduced prices on products. Additionally, shopping at Aldi at 10 am on a Wednesday is recommended, as this is when staff restock their regular items and there is a wider selection available. Aldi also offers energy-saving gadgets to help reduce heating costs.
