Empty Shelves and Relocation

A flagship Ann Summers store on Glasgow's Argyle Street has closed its doors, leaving behind empty shelves and boxes piled up in the windows. The brand has stated that the store is being relocated elsewhere in the city center.

Upcoming Store Opening

Despite the closure, Ann Summers has experienced recent success in its brick and mortar stores. The nearby Buchanan Galleries store, which opened on Valentine's Day, has seen a 7.6% increase in retail sales since 2020. The chain's gross profit reached £60m, up from £50.9m in 2021, supporting its 88 stores across the UK and Ireland. Additionally, four or five new stores are set to open in 2024.

Challenges for Retailers

Ann Summers' closure is not an isolated incident, as retailers across the country face difficulties in keeping their doors open. The Mount Plesant Tesco Express in Liverpool will permanently close on November 15, impacting nearby university students. Boots is also planning to close two shops as part of a larger store shake-up. Meanwhile, Wilko, a popular retailer, went into administration in August after failing to secure a buyer.

Despite these challenges, Ann Summers remains optimistic and looks forward to celebrating the opening of its new store in Glasgow soon.
