Asda beats M&S in Christmas taste test, says Good Housekeeping

Discount retailer wins in five categories

A bargain supermarket has been named better than M&S for Christmas dinner, according to the annual taste test by Good Housekeeping. Asda came out on top in five categories, including starters, dessert, Christmas pudding, champagne, and festive liqueurs. The supermarket also secured second place in two other categories – pigs in blankets and mince pies. Waitrose was crowned top for turkeys and roast potatoes, while Iceland claimed the best mince pies.

Asda's winning dishes

In the starters category, Asda's scallop and prawn vol au vents with spiced rum and brown butter sauce scored 93 out of 100, beating M&S's shallot tarte tatin. Asda's Extra Special 6-month matured jewelled topped Christmas pudding came first in the Christmas pudding category. In the champagne category, Asda's Extra Special Louis Bernard champagne vintage brut beat Waitrose's offering by one point. Asda also secured second place for pigs in blankets and mince pies.

The taste test also revealed winners in other categories, including salmon, turkey, roast potatoes, meat-free centrepieces, yule log, stollen, Christmas cake, mince pies, panettone, champagne, prosecco, and sherry. Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, and Co-op were among the other supermarkets to feature in the list of winners.
