Asda Beats Morrisons to Reclaim Cheapest Supermarket Title

Asda has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket for a trolley full of groceries, knocking Morrisons off the top spot. The analysis by consumer group Which? compares prices across eight major supermarkets on a monthly basis. Last month, Morrisons came out on top, but this month's results reveal that Asda has regained its title.

Affordable Shopping at Asda

For a trolley load of 133 items, including branded products like Andrex toilet paper and Cathedral City cheese, Asda was the cheapest option with an average cost of £325.35. This beats Morrisons by £15.93, as their trolley of shopping averaged at £341.28 in August. Waitrose, on the other hand, was £43.69 more expensive than Asda, coming in at £369.04 or 13% more for the same items.

Aldi Tops List for Smaller Shop

When it comes to a smaller shop, Aldi takes the lead. Which? compared a basket of goods across all major supermarkets, including Aldi and Lidl. The findings revealed that the average cost of a basket of groceries at Aldi was £65.21. Fellow discounter Lidl was not far behind, with their basket costing £66.53 on average. On the other hand, Waitrose was the most expensive option, with a basket totaling £79.51 on average. This is 22% more expensive than Aldi.

Supermarkets Must Do More to Help Shoppers

According to Which?, supermarkets need to do more to support consumers and provide affordable options. They should ensure that smaller convenience stores stock a range of essential budget lines to support a healthy diet. Supermarkets should also make unit pricing clear, enabling customers to easily find the best value products. Morrisons has taken steps in this direction by committing to stock 40 of its budget items in smaller convenience stores.

How to Save Money on Supermarket Shopping

There are several ways to save money on your supermarket shop. Start by making a list before you go, to avoid impulse purchases. Opt for supermarkets' own-brand goods instead of more expensive brands. Many supermarkets also offer discounted "wonky" vegetables, where you can get fresh produce at a lower price. Additionally, compare prices based on quantity and make use of loyalty schemes to accumulate points for future savings.
