Pharmacy Chain Continues Store Closure Plan

Boots, the well-known pharmacy chain, is set to close more stores in the coming days, leaving shoppers confused about the decision. This comes after the company had previously announced the closure of 300 shops over the next year. The closures are part of a wider plan to reduce the retailer's total number of shops from 2,200 to 1,900.

Unveiling the Locations: Two More Stores to Shut Within Days

Boots had initially not revealed which specific stores were going to be closed when the plans were announced in June. However, over time, the company has slowly disclosed the locations of the stores that would be shutting down. This week, two more branches will be closing for good on Friday, October 13: Glastonbury and Uppingham Road in Leicester.

Shoppers Express Confusion and Disappointment

Shoppers have taken to social media to voice their concerns about the closure of Boots stores. One person on Facebook couldn't understand the decision, stating that the Leicester store was convenient for patients picking up prescriptions, especially the elderly. Another person shared their experience of using the pharmacy, mentioning the helpful staff and organized services.

Recent Store Closures

In addition to the upcoming closures, Boots has already closed stores in several locations this year. Last week, two stores closed in Wakefield. Other closures in 2023 include shops in Greater Manchester, Malvern, Ellesmere, London, Woking, UEA campus, Westcliff, and Flintshire. Boots has assured customers that there is an alternative store available within three miles of each closed location.

More Closures to Come

Boots has also revealed the locations of upcoming closures before the end of this year. Stores in Woking, York, Warminster, Great Yarmouth, Darlington, Plymouth, Exeter, and Prudhoe, will be closing their doors in the coming months. Affected team members have been given the opportunity to work at other stores in their local area.

A History of Closures

Boots had previously closed over 200 stores in an eighteen-month period starting in 2019. The closures were mainly due to these stores being unprofitable, with two-thirds of them located within walking distance of each other. In 2020, the company announced the closure of 48 opticians, resulting in the loss of 4,000 jobs.
