The figure was revealed by a survey for data firm Kantar. Fraser McKevitt, its head of retail and consumer insight, said: “Many people have begun the countdown to Christmas 2020 already, using more time at home to go big on festive revelry.”

The poll found that 42 per cent are determined to go all out this Christmas after a tough year due to the pandemic.

Sales of turkeys are up by 36 per cent, while more than £11million was spent on Christmas puddings last month alone.

Shoppers spent 238 per cent more on Christmas lights in the month to November 15.

Meanwhile, pub restrictions and an early start to celebrations pushed alcohol spend a third higher than in the same four weeks last year.

And sales of popular Yuletide tipples like cream liqueurs have more than doubled compared with 2019.
