Shoppers Want a High Street Resurgence

A recent poll of over 2,000 adults found that 81% of shoppers believe it is very important to keep high streets alive. One in four adults feel that their local high street is just surviving and want to see a resurgence. Brits have a clear vision of what the perfect high street would look like, with a patisserie, deli, farm shop, and vintage store topping the list.

Independent Shops Bring Joy to Shoppers

The poll also revealed that 29% of shoppers feel happy or excited when they wander around independent shops instead of standard chain stores. Shoppers see numerous benefits to shopping with independent retailers, including supporting the local economy (53%), receiving better customer service (41%), and finding higher quality and more interesting products (35%).

Shoppers Show Support for Independent Retailers

Nearly three quarters of shoppers visit independent retailers often or occasionally, with a third shopping local a few times a week. In fact, 44% of shoppers feel guilty if they resort to shopping in supermarkets or chain stores. Over half of respondents (54%) would turn to online shopping if they were forced to travel further to shop, with 63% stating they would be willing to travel for half an hour.

Generational Preferences for the Ideal High Street

When it comes to different generations, the study found that 26% of those aged 25 to 34 want the perfect coffee shop that offers a flat white, while 28% of Gen Z's prioritize sustainably created products. For those over 55, a book shop with a cozy nook for reading is essential. Zero waste stores are in demand among those aged 35 to 44, along with a craft beer seller. Local butchers are a priority in the North East, while Londoners want an art gallery. Cake shops are popular in the North West, and the South West values bakeries.

Supporting Independent Retailers Benefits the Economy

Half of all respondents (48%) have noticed a decrease in the number of independent shops opening, and 55% said their favorite local shop had closed in the past two years. Three quarters (73%) said it made them feel sad or angry when they see a small retailer shut down. The majority (71%) believe it is now time for independent shops to take over the spaces left by the closure of big brands. Supporting independent retailers strengthens the community's economic resilience and ensures that consumers can benefit from shopping experiences specifically curated with their interests in mind.
