Retailer Faces Backlash Over "Virtue-Signalling" Move

A popular high street retailer has come under fire for what some are calling a "woke" move. Card Factory, known for its wide selection of greeting cards, sent out an email to thousands of customers offering an opt-out for Valentine's Day marketing. The company suggested that the cards could potentially trigger spurned lovers or those who simply don't celebrate the holiday. However, critics argue that the warning is unnecessary and an example of "virtue-signalling."

The email from Card Factory stated: "We're just getting in touch to check whether or not you'd like to receive our Valentine's Day emails. Whether it's a tough time for you or you simply don't celebrate it, feel free to opt out of our Valentine's emails by clicking on the button below."

Many have ridiculed the retailer for what they see as an overreaction. Stephen Brown from Preston commented, "The world's gone mad if we need to warn people who have been dumped about Valentine's Day cards. It just looks like another company virtue-signalling and caught up in woke nonsense. It takes a special kind of snowflake to be upset by a Valentine's Day card."

Author Katy Colins from Helmsley, North Yorks, added, "It's pointless and unnecessary, and it detracts from when people need to opt out for real reasons."

Card Factory is not the only company to offer opt-outs for Valentine's Day marketing. Other card retailers, such as Funky Pigeon and Thortful, as well as the craft marketplace Etsy, have also provided similar options for their customers.

Responding to the backlash, Card Factory explained, "Like many other companies, we offer our customers the choice of opting out of Valentine's Day emails. For an array of different reasons, some occasions aren't for everyone."
