Connswater Shopping Centre in Belfast is facing significant challenges as nearly half of its retail units remain vacant. The closure of Shoe Zone and EE before Christmas has left the majority of occupied units occupied by charity and community groups. Adding to the woes, Brand Max/Sports Direct, one of the largest stores in the complex, is set to close in the coming months. The situation has raised concerns among staff and customers, with fears that the shopping centre could shut down entirely if the trend continues.

Empty Units and Frustration

With almost 50% of the retail units empty, Connswater Shopping Centre is struggling to attract customers. Despite the retail park outside remaining busy, one staff member expressed concern about the lack of foot traffic inside the shopping centre. Customers have taken to social media to express their frustration and disappointment with the current state of affairs. Many believe that the shopping centre needs a significant overhaul to bring back its former glory.

Sports Direct Closure and Staff Impact

The upcoming closure of Sports Direct Connswater has added to the shopping centre's challenges. The closure, scheduled for Spring 2024, will result in job losses. However, the spokesperson for Frasers Group, the parent company of Sports Direct, stated that they are committed to finding new roles within the Group for affected staff members.

Continued Challenges for Sports Direct

This is not the first Sports Direct branch to face closure in recent months. The retailer closed its store in the Central Six Retail Park in Coventry in October and its branch in Blackpool in November. Additionally, Sports Direct Fitness closed its Salisbury site in December, leaving members shocked.

As Connswater Shopping Centre grapples with high vacancy rates and the closure of major tenants like Sports Direct, it remains to be seen how the complex will adapt and attract new businesses to revitalize the shopping experience.
