Costa Coffee Confirms Store Closures in 2023

The popular coffee chain Costa has announced that several of its stores will be closing permanently this year. With around 2,000 sites nationwide, it's likely that you have a Costa Coffee near you. However, the chain has already closed dozens of its locations in recent months as part of its ongoing review of its store estate.

Why Costa Coffee Closes Stores

Costa regularly evaluates its store locations across the UK to ensure they are meeting the needs of their communities and teams. This means that some stores may close or undergo renovation, while new stores may also be opened. The goal is to provide the best possible experience for Costa Coffee customers.

List of Closed Costa Coffee Shops

Here is a list of Costa Coffee sites that have already closed in 2023:

  • Coliseum retail park in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire – June 3
  • Welch Way, Witney – June 5
  • Wigan town centre – June 25
  • Five Rise shopping centre, Bingley – July 9
  • High Street, Worcester – July (relocated September 15)
  • Lowestoft's North Quay retail park – July 23 (refurbishment)

  • West Bridgford, near Nottingham – September 22
  • Commercial Street, Newport, Wales – October

  • Gatwick Airport South Terminal – November

Note that some of these closed locations may be returning to their local areas in the future.

Upcoming Costa Coffee Closures

The following Costa Coffee branches are set to close this year:

  • Packhorse Road, Buckinghamshire – January 10

  • Chiswick High Road, London – February 6
  • Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh – February 15

Impact on the Food and Drink Industry

The closure of Costa Coffee stores is not an isolated incident. Many food and drink chains have been struggling in recent months due to rising living costs and fewer people dining out. The pandemic had already hit the industry hard, and now businesses are facing additional challenges such as soaring energy bills and inflation.

Other well-known brands, like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny's, have been forced to close branches. Burger chain Byron Burger collapsed into administration, resulting in the loss of over 200 jobs. Prezzo, an Italian chain, also closed 46 restaurants last year due to increasing energy and food costs, putting 810 jobs at risk.

However, some chains have managed to persevere. Greggs, for example, has announced plans for significant expansion, and bakery chains Wenzel's the Bakers and Patisserie Valerie are looking to open new branches.

In this ever-evolving and competitive digital world, Costa Coffee is making strategic decisions to ensure it remains a trailblazer in the coffee industry. Stay tuned for updates on Costa Coffee's store estate as it continues to navigate the challenges of today's digital world.
