DECORATING a nursery for your newborn can be expensive.

Parents fork out on average £853, a recent survey found.

But I loved Loose Women panellist and mum-of-three Stacey Solomon’s admission last week that she spent just £50 on son Rex’s nursery update.

If you want to create the perfect place for your little one, on the cheap, try these tips and deals . . .

LIGHT UP: Get the rainbow light Stacey bought Rex, for £9.95 on eBay. Or choose a cute night light in the shape of a panda, llama or flamingo for just £3.49 from The Range.

SAVE: £6.46 on a night light if you buy from The Range

UPCYCLE: Instead of throwing away an old chest of drawers, sand it down and spruce it up with Wilko’s £4 varnish then add themed drawer knobs — Etsy has several bargain options including animal cartoon ones starting at just 99p each, so six would cost £8.93 (including £2.99 delivery).

It all works out much cheaper than buying a brand new chest of drawers from John Lewis, where they start at £100.

STICK TO IT: Like the idea of a feature wall but want to be able to change it up in a few years? Wall stickers are the key. A pack of adhesive stars is £14 at Dunelm. Or cheaper still, a pack of stick-on gold-effect confetti dots is £8 and they look really pretty. Or hang up some bunting, from Amazon for £3.18.

SAVE: Save £6 on the wall stickers

GO MOBILE: I am a fan of the Woodland mobile, £14 at jojomamanbebe.co.uk and much cheaper than the £50 option at my1styears.com. Or another idea is turning your kids’ old jumpers or baby blankets into cushion covers — do not let those memories go to waste.

SAVE: £24 on a mobile

MAKE A WISH: If you create a baby wishlist on Amazon, you can share it with friends and family and make sure you get the things you want for your new arrival. But I really like the fact that if you spend £20 on products, you can claim a free Angelcare nappy disposal unit, worth £20.

SAVE: £20 if you were buying a nappy unit anyway
