Which? Analysis Reveals the Best Deals
If you're looking to save some money on your Christmas dinner, Which? has done the research for you. The consumer website analyzed the prices of 12 popular items across seven major supermarket chains to find the cheapest options. The winners? Aldi and Lidl. Not only are they the most affordable, but they beat the most expensive supermarket by a whopping £19.
What's on the List?
Which? looked at the prices of various items, including a medium frozen turkey crown, pigs in blankets, Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, broccoli, peas, potatoes, stock, cranberry sauce, and Christmas pudding.
Aldi and Lidl Come Out on Top
Aldi was crowned the cheapest overall, with the 12 items costing £33.80. Lidl came in a close second at £33.84. Asda, a traditional supermarket, took third place with a basket cost of £37.01. Tesco and Sainsbury's followed at £39.49 and £44.81, respectively. Morrisons was the second most expensive at £45.34, while Waitrose took the top spot at £52.68.
Biggest Savings at Aldi and Lidl
Which? found that shoppers heading to Aldi or Lidl for their Christmas dinner could save £18.88 compared to shopping at Waitrose. The biggest price difference was seen in the cost of cranberry sauce, with Aldi selling a 200g jar for 59p, while Waitrose's own-brand sauce was £2.20 – 270% more expensive.
Changes in Prices
Which? also discovered that the price of a medium turkey crown had increased at some supermarkets compared to the previous year. However, Asda managed to lower the price of their frozen turkey crown by 3% despite high inflation. Aldi and Lidl kept the price of their turkey crown the same year on year.
Choose the Best Supermarket for Your Budget
Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, emphasized that there are significant savings to be made by choosing one of the cheaper supermarkets. While Aldi and Lidl were the cheapest options, traditional supermarkets like Asda were not far behind. With prices under £40, most people are likely to have a store nearby where they can find their festive essentials.
