Nearly 425,000 British Gas customers have the opportunity to earn money by reducing their energy consumption tonight. The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) will activate its Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) for the second time this week due to cold weather. The DFS pays participants for using less energy during peak times, with the goal of preventing blackouts and relieving pressure on the UK's energy network.

How Does it Work?

Households that use less electricity than usual during specific periods will be compensated for their savings. Participants are not required to turn off lights but are encouraged to switch off appliances like washing machines. Each energy provider, including British Gas, has its own eligibility criteria. To enroll in British Gas's PeakSave scheme, you must be a customer with a working smart meter that provides 30-minute readings and pay for your energy through direct debit.

Earn Cash Back Tonight

Eligible households will be offered cash back for reducing their energy usage between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm today (December 1st). The overall goal is to use 30% less energy, but you will earn money regardless of how much you save. British Gas passes on 100% of the payment it receives from National Grid ESO for each kilowatt-hour saved. During tonight's event, customers will be paid £5 per kilowatt-hour saved within the designated time period.

How to Participate

British Gas customers can sign up online and will receive email invitations to each event. If you are not a British Gas customer, there are other energy firms that are also offering incentives for reducing energy consumption this winter. Additionally, British Gas customers enrolled in the PeakSave scheme will continue to receive half-price electricity on Sundays until December 31st. This offer allows households to use as much electricity as they want between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm on Sundays, when demand is low.

By signing up for the PeakSave scheme, customers can receive a 50% discount on all electricity consumed during the specified hours. The credit will appear as "PeakSave Credit" on your bill or online statement, and British Gas will provide a monthly breakdown of your savings.
