An iconic fashion chain with 230 stores is set to close one of its branches at the end of the month. However, shoppers in Portsmouth, Hampshire, won't have to worry for long, as the Matalan store is only moving up the road.

Relocation in progress

The retailer will shut its Station Street unit in the city centre on September 30 and move to the Pompey Centre. The exact opening date for the new store is yet to be confirmed, but a Matalan spokesperson stated that it would be "mid Autumn".

Big changes at the shopping centre

The move coincides with a downsizing of the B&Q store at the shopping centre, which will create space for three other businesses. Aldi and Home Bargains were announced as prospective tenants last year, and a map on the Matalan website indicates that the fashion and homewares store will be occupying the third spot inside the revamped unit.

Good news for shoppers

A Matalan spokesperson confirmed the closure of the current Portsmouth store and stated, "It will be relocating to a great new unit at the Pompey Centre retail park. The new store will be opening in mid Autumn."

Closing down sale

In the meantime, Matalan is currently offering newborn Christmas baby grows for just £1.50, down from £7, at their closing down sale. Shoppers can also find other bargains, such as baby shoes for £3.50, down from £7.50, at the Renfrew branch in Scotland. Additionally, a huge black bamboo framed mirror is available for just £14.
