Thousands of households in the UK could be entitled to a free cash payment of up to £25 as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) activates cold weather payments in certain postcodes. These payments are designed to support those who are struggling financially during cold spells. Eligible households will receive £25 for each seven-day period of low temperatures from now until March 31. The cash will be paid directly into their bank accounts within 14 days.

How do cold weather payments work?

Cold weather payments are triggered in areas where residents experience continuous below-zero temperatures. So far in November, over 285 postcodes have qualified for these payments, meaning thousands of households are owed cash. The payments are made automatically, including for those on Universal Credit. In bank statements, the payment will appear as your National Insurance number followed by "DWP CWP" in England and Wales, and as "SSA CWP" in Northern Ireland.

Who is eligible for cold weather payments?

Households can qualify for cold weather payments if they receive any of the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support for mortgage interest

Depending on individual circumstances, additional criteria may need to be met, such as having a disability, a disabled child, or being in receipt of certain tax credits. More information on eligibility can be found on the government's website.

How to claim cold weather payments

If you are eligible for cold weather payments, you should receive the payments automatically within 14 days, directly into the same account where you receive your benefit payments. However, if you believe you should have received a payment but haven't, you can contact your pension center, Jobcentre Plus office, or call the Universal Credit helpline on 0800 328 5644. If you are on Universal Credit, you can also add a note to your account's journal.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to receive a cold weather payment. Check if your postcode is eligible and make sure you're getting the support you're entitled to.
