A former soldier in the Coldstream Guards, Alan Jones, had a stroke of luck when he won the Postcode Lottery just 12 hours before he was set to move out of his home. Jones, 56, had almost cancelled his ticket for his sold Tyne and Wear house but decided to keep it. Little did he know that his Westerhope postcode would strike gold, with him and five other neighbors winning £166,666 each.

A Last-Minute Win

Jones, a dad-of-one, had just finished a night shift as a security guard for Newcastle College when he received the life-changing news. He had planned to move into his nephew's place while he searched for a new home, but this unexpected windfall has given him more flexibility in his plans.

"I've always wanted to go out and get a log cabin in Northumberland. Who knows! I also told my son I'll sort him out. A holiday in Turkey or the Greek island of Skiathos would be good, too," Jones said.

He had initially planned to sign up for the lottery again once he found his new home, but now he can celebrate his win and enjoy some much-deserved time off.

A Special Birthday Surprise

Jones' next-door neighbor, Claire Turnbull, also had a reason to celebrate. It was her mother's 57th birthday, and she was holding a cheque for her own lottery win. Turnbull plans to buy a new car with her winnings and treat her family to a trip to Disney World in Florida.

"I got rid of my car during Covid and never got another one. This means I'll be able to get the kids out and about a bit more. I love Turkey, I could take the kids there or Disney in America," Turnbull said.

She also expressed her gratitude for her family's support and plans to treat them with her newfound wealth.

Supporting the Community

In addition to the lucky winners, the Postcode Community Trust has donated £70,000 to the Liberdade community development trust, an arts organization for people with learning disabilities. This generous contribution will help support their mission and provide opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities to engage in the arts.

Overall, it was a fortunate day for Alan Jones, Claire Turnbull, and their neighbors, who are now able to embark on new adventures and treat their loved ones to memorable experiences.
