SEVERAL major high street brands are closing stores for good before the end of the month.
B&M, Iceland, Lidl and New Look are closing stores for good in May and your local could be affected.
Several major high street retailers are shutting store in May
Some stores will be replaced with brand new shops while others will shut for good.
B&M is closing two stores this month and opening in a brand new location.
Farmfoods is closing one of its discount stores in London within hours.
Iceland is closing one of its stores in May and another later on in June.
Discount supermarket Lidl will also close two of its stores before the end of the month.
New Look is also permanently closing a single store next week after already shutting a handful of stores earlier this year.
Each brand is closing its stores for a wide variety of reasons which includes citing high energy bills and poor building conditions.
Here’s a full list of the stores closing before the end of May.
B&M
B&M is closing a single store permanently this month and relocating another.
The retailer will close and relocate its Widnes store next week.
A statement on the B&M website reads: “Your B&M Widnes store is moving from its current location at Bowers Retail Park to its new home at Widnes Trade Park (former The Range).”
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we bring you a bigger and better B&M store.”
The old store in Widness will shut for good on Wednesday, May 17 and the new store will open its doors to customers on Wednesday, May 24.
B&M’s Burnden Retail Park store in Bolton will then close for good on May 24.
Shoppers will still be able to visit the store on Manchester Road nearby.
Farmfoods
The Farmfoods store in West Bromwich is set to shut its doors on Sunday, May 14.
Shoppers can snap up bargains at the shop before it closes, with everything labelled half price.
Windows have been spotted showing sale signs explaining the big discounts.
The area’s BID (Business Improvement District) team posted on Facebook: “Farmfoods High Street West Bromwich is closing which will be very sad for our town.
“We wish all the staff best of luck.
“On Sunday, May 14 everything in the West Bromwich store will be 50% off.”
The bargain supermarket chain, famous for its frozen food, has around 300 shops across Great Britain.
It often has some cheap offers on popular products which shopper regularly rush to pick up including makeup and air fryers too.
Iceland
Iceland has already shut the doors on more than half a dozen shops this year, but more closures are on the way.
Several stores closed for good earlier this year, including branches in Bromsgrove, Basingstoke and Rhyl.
Plus, a further three stores in Newport, Berwick and Hexham closed on Saturday, April 22.
It comes as a number of big retailers look to close branches as they struggle with high energy costs and soaring inflation.
Iceland has now confirmed it will be closing two more stores this year.
Shoppers in Flint, Wales, will lose their store on May 27.
And the branch in Beccles, Suffolk, will shut for good on June 17.
This will bring the total number of Iceland closures this year to 11.
Lidl
Lidl, which has 950 sites, is closing or relocating a number of its supermarkets over the next couple of months.
Its store on Drayton Road, Mile Cross, closed on Sunday, April 30.
But Lidl is closing another two supermarkets in May.
Its shops on Sturry Road, Canterbury, and Forton Road in Gosport will both shut on Sunday, May 28.
They’re closing due to the poor condition of the building and bosses deeming them unfit for purpose.
All affected staff will be offered roles at alternative locations.
Lidl is also set to close its store in The Quadrant in Redditch town centre later this year after opening a replacement store on Battens Drive in June 2022 – although the closure date isn’t yet confirmed.
New Look
New Look has already shut seven stores this year and plans to close a further shop later this month.
Its Newlands Shopping Centre store in Witham will close for good on Thursday, May 18.
A spokesperson for New Look said: “Our store in Witham will be closing on May 18.
“We are supporting colleagues and we are looking to accommodate the team into local stores where possible.
“We have enjoyed being part of the local community and would like to thank all our customers for shopping with us.”
New Look closed the following stores in January:
- Birmingham, Fort Shopping Park – January 9
- Trowbridge – January 23
- Coventry – January 29
- Birmingham, Bullring – January 30
It also closed its stores in Walthamstow, the Grosvenor Centre in Northampton and Kirkcaldy in February.
