A popular high street fashion retailer is set to close its store in Southampton in just a matter of days, causing disappointment among its loyal fans. The beloved branch, located at Westquay Shopping Centre, will be shutting its doors for good on January 6. Customers have already noticed the closing down signs in the store's windows, and a sale offering 20% off all items is now in effect.

Fans express frustration on social media

The closure of the Southampton store has left many customers saddened. Taking to social media, dozens of fans expressed their frustration and disappointment. One customer described the brand as "already dying" for years, stating that its fate was sealed once it was bought by Sports Direct. Another lamented the decline of Jack Wills after the acquisition, calling it "such a shame."

Jack Wills' history and recent struggles

Jack Wills was founded in 1999 as a single shop in Devon and gained popularity in the mid-2000s with its fashionable clothing. However, it began to lose its appeal in subsequent years as the target audience shifted towards grungier styles. In August 2019, the brand was bought out by Mike Ashley's Sports Direct for £12.75 million. Since then, it has faced numerous challenges and announced permanent store closures in March 2020.

Wave of closures impacting other locations

Following the initial closures, Jack Wills announced the permanent shutdown of nine more stores, including ones in Abersock, Aldeburgh, Dartmouth, St Ives, and Rushden Lakes. The Worcester branch also recently confirmed its closure at the start of the new year, with closure signs now displayed on the store's front in the high street centre.

Response from the owners

HOAR has reached out to Frasers Group, the owners of Jack Wills, for comment on the closure of the Southampton store. No response has been received at the time of writing.

Another blow to deal-savvy shoppers

In another setback for bargain-hunting shoppers, a discount store comparable to Poundstretcher, called MaxiSaver, has permanently closed one of its locations in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. The shutters were pulled down for good on December 31, according to observant shoppers. A notice posted on the store's front confirmed the closure and expressed gratitude to all customers.
