The Decline of the High Street
The high street has faced significant challenges this year, with several chains closing all of their physical stores. This has left empty shop fronts across the country and fans of these familiar favourites devastated.
Struggles in the Retail Industry
Many high street retailers have been struggling for years, especially after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Rising energy costs and the growing trend of online shopping have made it difficult for these businesses to stay afloat.
Wilko: The End of an Era
Wilko, a popular discount retailer, fell into administration in August. Despite potential buyers expressing interest, no one was able to purchase the whole business, resulting in the closure of all 400 shops. However, some of the stores were purchased by Poundland and B&M, while The Range plans to relaunch some Wilko stores across the UK.
Saying Goodbye to Paperchase
Paperchase, known for its quirky stationery and gift items, also faced closure this year. The brand fell into administration in February and closed all 134 of its shops. However, supermarket giant Tesco bought the rights to the brand and reintroduced it in 250 Tesco supermarkets as "Paperchase at Tesco."
Quality Save: A Disappearing Brand
The discount brand Quality Save was acquired by Home Bargains, leading to the closure of its 21 shops. Some of these stores will undergo refurbishment and rebranding as Home Bargains locations.
M&Co: A Second Blow
M&Co, previously known as Mackay's, faced administration for the second time in two years. Although the brand and intellectual property were sold to Yours Clothing, the chain's 170 shops were not included in the deal and had to close. However, Yours Clothing plans to launch a new M&Co website and open 50 physical M&Co stores over the next two years.
Cath Kidston: A Floral Farewell
Popular chain Cath Kidston closed its last remaining stores in June. The brand was bought by Next but did not include the physical shops. Customers can now shop Cath Kidston products through the Next website.
Argos: Closing its Doors
Argos announced the closure of all its stores in the Republic of Ireland in 2023. The chain also closed several sites in the UK, including in Wales. Argos plans to focus on expanding its presence in supermarkets and closing 100 stores across the UK.
