Two Martin Lewis fans have revealed how the expert's handy tip helped them get a £10,000 refund on an essential bill. In the latest MoneySavingExpert newsletter, the couple, named Paul and Pamela, shared how they got the cash after reading MSE's handy guide.

Unlocking a £10,000 Refund

The couple, Paul and Pamela, read an article on MoneySavingExpert about how those with severe mental impairment (SMI) can get a discount on their council tax payments. The "severely mentally impaired" (SMI) council tax discount is a minimum of 25% reduction of a household's council tax bill.

Paul and Pamela, who care for their 35-year-old son with cerebral palsy, received a refund for the past seven years, amounting to almost £10,000, and had their council tax reduced by 50%.

Is Council Tax Going Up?

Meanwhile, nearly all local authorities in England and Wales are set to raise council tax by 4.99% in April. This increase is the largest amount allowed by the government without having to hold a local referendum.

For the typical Band D property, this 5% rise could mean an extra £103.25 a year. Certain areas have even been given permission to hike bills by 10%.

Other Council Tax Discounts

If you don't qualify for the SMI discount, you may be eligible for other reductions. For example, living alone or with certain household compositions can lead to discounts ranging from 25% to 100%.

Pensioners may also find themselves eligible for council tax reductions based on various criteria.

How to Apply for a Reduction

You can apply for a reduction through the Government website, providing necessary documentation and information. You can also check your council tax band and potentially get your house re-banded if you believe you are overpaying.

Remember, applications for reductions are not always successful, so it's crucial to explore all options available.
